Fishing Rod Pen Set Review

I have lost count of the amount of times that I have been away on Holiday and come across a fishing spot which has made me yearn for my kit and a couple of hours fishing.

I have also spent countless hours looking both at home and whilst away at travel fishing kits but the ones I have looked at all share the same problem.... they are just too big!
The ones I was looking at were all telescopic rods with reels and they were about the width of a suitcase. No good for those 2 day trips with hand luggage.

Then came Christmas, and a present from my in-laws in the form of the Fishing Rod Pen Set imported by BBTradesales and made by www.wiki-products.com.

Fishing Rod Pen Set Contents

The Fishing Rod Pen Set is a 3 foot long Fishing Rod which is styled like a pen, which includes a lid with working clip. The kit includes everything you need to get fishing which includes:

  • The rod.
  • A minature fishing reel, woth included spool pre loaded with line.
  • 1 x Lead weight
  • 2 x Hooks
  • 2 x Artificial baits
  • 2 x Floats
  • 1 x Bobber for bottom fishing.

Opening the case and everthing is held nice and secure within with  elasticated straps. The rod is extended from is base size of just over 20cm long to around 3 feet long. The rod collapses with the lid attached is around 2.5cm wide.

The reel is made from real aluminum making it nice and strong and reliable. Its a rear drag style reel which means that a fish is able to run with line with a short twist of the top ratchet.
A handle at the base enables the spool to wind one way or two ways and makes putting the handle on the left or right easy depending on your preferance.

The handle is attached just like a full sized fishing reel and once attached the smooth ball bearing action comes in to play. The wind ratio on the reel is 5.1:1 which means one full wind of the handle means the spool turns 5.1 times.

Setting up the rod and reel is easy as the reel is held in place with a screw compression mount much like a full sized rod. The set up is then as easy as running the line through the 4 eyelets and compiling your rig.

The extras that come with the kit in the form of floats, hooks and imitation baits are housed in a small plastic box. The floats are poor quality and a short spell in the sun melted the thin plastic sticking the two floats together. I think the kit came from China so this wasnt a surprise.
It wasnt a problem though because a few from my normal kit replaced them.

The last item in the case is a pair of collapsable scisors which you can use for trimming your setup.

Fishing Rod Pen Set Verdict

I have only managed to use the kit once and that was during a trip to La Colobra in Majorca Spain. This is a fantastic jarassic parkesque area with a beach and river. When I went the river not in flow and almost dried up but there were plenty of patches of water which held a good head of mullet.

Freelining bread into the river and catching was easy. A small 2lb mullet was my prize and I have to say the Fishing Rod Pen set performed well. The rod has a nice bend to it with a fish on and although its small it didn't feel cheap or poorly made. I was impressed.

The good thing about these Pen Fishing Rod Kits is that they have increased in popularity in the past year and they are pretty much everywhere on the internet. There are quite a few on Amazon and their price has decreased as they have become so popular.
The kit from Wiki Products is the perfect one to take away on holiday if space is at a premium.
I just love my Fishing Rod Pen set. You can click the links below to check them out on Amazon.
